Let us have a look into the importance of “Focus”

I would like to narrate my own experience which is having a close connect with the aspect of “Focus”.

My life was not that easy. My family was going through big financial crisis during my Plus Two (Pre University) studies. Soon after the completion, I decided to find a job and thought it was a full stop for my studies as I have to take care of my family, but my father wanted me to continue studies even though he had challenges in the financial front. One of my school teacher who was also my neighbour insisted me to continue my studies and he told to join Polytechnic Diploma.

Finally I got admission in a Government Polytechnic College and continued my studies. As it was Government, the fees were nominal, but the nearest college was 54 KM away from my home. Some days, even I had struggled to have the money for bus fare too. Anyway my focus was on the studies and complete it with good grade and get a job. I was not having any specific target/ demand about job, only thing is I need to get a job. I heard from family, friends and relatives that getting a job was very difficult and anything you get, grab it !!!.

After the completion of my diploma and stood first in the college, my focus was to get a job (only a job) whatever it takes, I started looking around, but there was very remote chance to get an opportunity in my native location, I went to my mother’s place. Since I completed Diploma in Electronics, I thought of getting a job in electronics mechanic shop so that I can learn the work. Believe it or not I walked around 7 – 8 KM every day to find the job in each Electronics repair shops by asking “Is there any vacancy ?”. Days passed but no one was offered any opportunity !!!. You can imagine the frustration of a guy who is in a desperate situation to land on a job.

Finally I found there was an Authorised Philips Service Centre and I walked to the Centre, and I asked the proprietor for a job, he asked me multiple questions regarding my personal and educational background, knowledge in Electronics etc., and finally he offered the position ,after multiple follow up , he gave an Intern position for 6 months without any pay. I had to agree as there was no scope of getting a job due to my limiting beliefs. What I focused I got, I never focused on the better salary, the position etc.,

I worked there for 6 months and went back to my native as my father got another job by that time and the financial situations got somewhat better, I have been asked to join Engineering. I had written entrance exam in the Lateral Entry for Engineering and joined one reputed Engineering college. Thereby my circle of friends were changed, I focused only on my studies for better opportunities. I completed my Engineering as a college topper and came out with 2 Offers from Large Multi-National Companies.

The interesting fact that, I want to tell is, when I joined one of the companies I got the offer, I seen one of my senior in Polytechnic who completed only Diploma is working in the same company since last 4 years. Reading back to that experience, I now realised that it was the problem with my focus and limiting beliefs not because of the things around me.

I believe some of you reading this also can resonate with this type of experience in your life as well.

My learning after reading back my experience:

I realised the importance of Focus that “We get more of what we focus on”. Many times we focus on what we do not want. In my case I was focusing hard to get a job rather to have a job in a reputed company with better salary and worked towards that, it was really I wanted though.

We create more of what we don’t want and we don’t even realize we’re doing it.

Here are few steps to improve the focus and achieve what we want:

1. Focus on What You Want and Never Focus on What You Do Not Want

2. Be Aware of What You Want and not to focus on What You Do Not Want

3. Be Positive

4. Write your goal, Picturise it and Visualise it

5. Be committed and responsible

In simple terms “What You Focus Expands” !!!
